I'm Buying A Work Computer! What Do I Need To Get?

Modified on Thu, 15 Aug, 2024 at 11:30 AM

Equipping yourself for success! This guide will help you choose a computer that meets your work needs and is compatible with our company's IT environment.

Windows Operating System:

  • Windows 11 Pro is required. When you buy, be sure to purchase knowing you'll get Windows 11 Pro. If not, upgrading to Pro is necessary for features our company uses. Microsoft typically charges around $100 to upgrade. However, this process takes several more steps and much more time away from IT and its customers compared to simply purchasing in-spec computers in the beginning. We will no longer be provisioning computers purchased out-of-spec and will request they be returned. An in-spec computer be purchased instead.

Hardware Requirements:

Processor (CPU):

  • Choose an Intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 processor (or better). This ensures smooth performance with work applications.

Memory (RAM):

  • Get at least 16GB of RAM. This allows you to run multiple programs simultaneously without slowdowns.

Storage:

  • Opt for a minimum of 512GB storage. This provides ample space for documents, programs, and files.

Ports:

  • Look for a computer with at least 1 USB-C port, especially if it can also be used for charging. USB-C is a newer, faster port that can connect to various devices, especially docking stations on desks for monitors, mice, keyboards, and more.

Manufacturer:

  • While brand doesn't strictly matter, Dell computers are very common in our environment.
