How to Free Up Space in Outlook Online

Having trouble with your Outlook storage? Follow these simple steps to free up space in your Outlook (Exchange Online) mailbox.


  1. Log into OWA:
    • Open a web browser and go to Outlook Web Access.
    • Enter your email and password, then click "Sign In". You might be MFA challenged as well.
  2. Open Settings:
    • Click the cog/gear ⚙️ icon at the top-right corner of the page.
  3. Go to Storage Settings:
    • On the left of the next menu, choose General.
    • After, click on Storage.
  4. Review Storage Usage:
    • Check how much space each folder is using. Look at your Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, and Junk Email folders.
  5. Empty Deleted Items:
    • Click on the Deleted Items folder.
    • Select all items and click "Empty folder" to delete them.
  6. Empty Junk Email:
    • Click on the Junk Email folder.
    • Select all items and click "Empty folder" to delete them.
  7. Delete Old Emails (optional, additional steps):
    • Go to your Inbox or Sent Items.
    • Sort emails by date or size to find old or large emails.
    • Select emails you no longer need and delete them.
  8. Check Storage After Cleanup:
    • Go back to Storage settings ⚙️ to see your updated storage usage. This can take quite some time to finish, but results as far as any related errors should end immediately.



Tips:

  • Regularly empty your Deleted Items and Junk Email folders.
  • Save large attachments to OneDrive and delete them from your emails.


By following these steps, you can keep your Outlook mailbox clean and avoid storage problems!
