Using SMS Verification as an Alternative Office 365 Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Method

Modified on Mon, 13 Jan at 5:20 PM

While authentication apps are common, SMS verification offers a convenient alternative for Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on your Office 365 account. This guide will walk you through setting up and using SMS verification for added security.

Note: You may opt to use other TOTP Authenticators, but Microsoft Authenticator and SMS are the only two that Robinson Park will support.

Step 1: Enabling SMS Verification:

  • Sign In: Log in to your Office 365 account at https://aka.ms/MFASetup.
  • Choose Yes or No if you want to remain logged into that computer when all is complete.
  • Choose 2FA Method: Select "I want to set up a different method" on the Microsoft Authenticator screen.

Step 2: Verifying with SMS Codes:

  • In the drop-down, choose "Phone."
  • Enter Phone Number: Provide your mobile phone number. Make sure it's capable of receiving SMS messages.
  • Verification Code: During login, you'll receive an SMS with a verification code on your mobile phone.
  • Enter Code: Enter the verification code on the login screen to complete the authentication.

Step 3: Maintaining SMS Verification:

  • Changing Phone Numbers: If you change your mobile number, visit https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info to update your 2FA settings.
  • Backup Access: Remember, just like with authentication apps, it's essential to set up backup options for account recovery.

Step 4: Benefits and Considerations:

  • Convenience: SMS verification doesn't require an additional app and is easy to use.
  • Security: While convenient, SMS codes can be intercepted. Always ensure your mobile device is secure.

Conclusion:

SMS verification offers a straightforward and effective way to enhance the security of your Office 365 account through Two-Factor Authentication. In the next article, we'll address common troubleshooting scenarios and how to overcome them.
